STUDIO SHYNESS moves through shyness in ten connected tracks. Eight guest artists join VORANAH as the record moves between alternative and electronic music. The running order gives those changes a direction. The self-criticism of “Sad Intro” eventually reaches the more assured pop-rock of “Peaceful Outro.”

At the center are “Mary” and “Jane.” The two instrumentals join into a four-part sequence of electronic textures and percussion. Elsewhere the bright surfaces carry less settled thoughts. “Meant to Be” deals with a damaging relationship and “Universi” imagines a happier self in another world.

loose leaves

i started planning my debut in late 2015 in an apartment in chicago

the name and the world came first

then ten titles each with a key and tempo

a laptop and some software got me started finishing took longer

graduation and work and life went on i kept making one piece at a time

i didn’t know the singers i had in mind so i sent them stories and instrumentals

then i waited for voices to come back

i’d learned from ilpo’s videos and writing long before asking him to master it

he welcomed the project and we still work together

i worked in chicago and seoul but i kept imagining a stage

my first big crowd was in 2005 just me playing rock on electric guitar

i went on to play guitar and dj live performance came first when i made music

in chicago i went to shows all the time sometimes i traveled to other cities too

i kept sorting songs into four parts

drums and bass other instruments and vocals

i could picture singers beside me with a guitar or dj setup in front of me

then the pandemic shut stages down

people made online shows some even performed inside video games

they found new ways to do it but i missed being in a room with a crowd

for a while i thought live music might never come back the way i knew it

i sold my dj gear i really thought i was done with it

a little extreme in hindsight i was completely serious at the time

i spent more time in the studio and the business grew during those years

the album still needed photos and videos visualizers and translated lyrics too

planning the release took research and plenty of trial and error

it took a lot of time and money some friends thought i’d never finish

i understood why but i finished

then something i’d made in my room started reaching people

some knew me in person some had never met me

they cared about the songs and the world i was building

that connection felt personal i was grateful for it

when shows came back i’d become much more of a studio person

i still want to take these songs onstage and give the debut a rock arrangement

there are more records to bring now the show in my head has kept growing
